Cincinnati Bearcats Fun Facts
The Cincinnati Bearcats are the NCAA athletic teams representing the University of Cincinnati. Since July 1, 2005, the school's athletic teams have been members of the Big East Conference. They were previously members of Conference USA, a conference of which they were a founding member. The creation of Conference USA was the result of a merger between the Great Midwest Conference (of which Cincinnati was a member) and the Metro Conference (whom Cincinnati had previously been a member) in 1995.
Cincinnati Bearcats Football
The Cincinnati Bearcats are a college football team that competes in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision and the Big East Conference. The Bearcats play in Nippert Stadium. Although the Big East's smallest venue, Nippert Stadium has been called the "Wrigley of College Football." It is the fifth oldest stadium still in use, and the fourth oldest playing site. The field, named for early UC football supporter Arch Carson, was in place as early as 1905 when it was the southern end of Burnet Woods Park. The main U of the stadium was completed in 1924 after the death of Jimmy Nippert from injuries sustained in the annual Thanksgiving Miami game. The funds necessary for its completion were donated by James Gamble in memory of his grandson. Plans are in the works to ultimately expand the stadium to include more premium seating options as well as seats. Nippert is in the center of campus and is nestled between many of the main campus buildings, making it one of the most unique locations in college football. During the week, when not in use by the department of athletics, the stadium is open to the campus community. It is used for intramural games and the stands are often used by students studying or taking advantage of campus wireless access. Midnight football on Nippert is a tradition for UC students.
